Georgia School Superintendent Kathy Cox released the state’s annual Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) report on July 25.

All City of Decatur Schools (CSD) except Decatur High School (DHS) and Glennwood Academy (GA) made AYP for 2008. Reports indicate that DHS and GA had student deficiences in mathematics at the 10th and 5th grade levels.

The Georgia Department of Education reports that in 2008, it was harder for all schools to make AYP for two main reasons:

  • 1. The percentage of students that had to pass state tests in math, reading and English went up for all grade levels.
  • 2. Students were doing more rigorous work and taking more rigorous tests in 2008, especially in mathematics.

Decatur EDtv spoke with City Schools of Decatur Associate Superintendent Dr. Thomas Van Soelen about the District's new Math Improvement Plan being implemented during the 2008-09 school year as a response to the AYP reports.

“This is a call to attention. We're

glad that we have a written plan

detailing what we're going to be

working on with mathematics

instruction [in 2008-2009.]”
